Dynamic Workload Release Orchestration In Enterprise Warehouse Operations: A Configurable EWM-WCS Integration Model For Operation Horizon Control

Uncontrolled release of Warehouse Orders to downstream sorting and picking infrastructure generates lane congestion, sorter throughput loss, and sustained labour overhead in high-velocity distribution environments. This article presents a dual-mode workload release architecture implemented within SAP Extended Warehouse Management (EWM) integrated with a Warehouse Control System (WCS). The architecture introduces an Operation Horizon parameter — a configurable 2–4 hour forward-planning window — as the primary criterion governing which Warehouse Orders are forwarded to the WCS for physical execution. Two release paths are provided: a manual path through a custom WH Monitor node for exception-driven planner control, and an automatic path through a DIVC-triggered batch report for systematic unattended release. All operational parameters are externalised to a maintainable custom control table (ZWORKLOAD_CTRL), enabling warehouse managers to adjust horizon values and release modes without ABAP development involvement. Deployed at a large US healthcare product distributor, the architecture reduced average lane queue depth by 75%, eliminated sorter idle spikes, increased peak-hour picks per operator-hour by 18%, and delivered an annual efficiency gain of USD 650,000 (Author's primary implementation data, 2023). The contribution is a documented design pattern — configurable horizon-gated dual-mode release — applicable to any EWM site with WCS sorter integration, supported by primary enterprise deployment evidence.
