Abstract

Internet of things (IoT) refers to an innovative concept used to link physical items through communication networks. IoT comprises of devices that contain sensors, embedded computational power, software and networking ability that allows collection, exchange and processing of data for provision of intelligent services. Though the name seems to indicate the dependency of IoT on the public internet, IoT devices can also function through private networks and communication infrastructures. IoT enables automation, monitoring and informed decision making through use of sensors, cloud computing, edge computing and artificial intelligence in fields such as health care, smart homes, industries, agriculture and transportation. Issues concerning security, privacy, interoperability and scalability should be taken into account while developing IoT systems.
