Abstract

This research aims to evaluate the effectiveness of the Chat Generative Pre-Trained Transformer (ChatGPT) in generating workplace-related complaints. Moreover, it focuses on evaluating the efficacy of ChatGPT in developing communicative competence, as an integral part of the teaching-learning process in the ESL classroom. Utilising a qualitative approach, the research purpose was achieved through an in-depth analysis of the ChatGPT-generated (ChatGPT-3.5) complaint using a case study design. These complaint tokens were produced using a hypothetical problematic situation based on a formal domain, that is, the Indian workplace; it was analysed using Anna Trosborg’s model of Complaint (1994) to study the complaint strategies, perspectives, and internal and external modifiers utilised by ChatGPT for the production of complaints. While testing the appropriateness of complaints generated by ChatGPT-3.5, this research examined whether the inclusion of ChatGPT in Indian classrooms would benefit the second language learners of English to acquire the language and simultaneously develop their communicative competence for effective and appropriate communication in the target language. Using this as a learning platform, language teachers would be able to achieve higher quality in their teaching activities, thereby improving learners' experience and overall quality of learning.
